Vessel of the Day Feb 18, 2014 Tall el-Hammam

In 2014, a complete mould-made Byzantine (early 6th cent. AD) radiated slipper candlestick oil lamp with a cross (Maltese?) was discovered in square LR17B′, Locus 1 (object #3; -159.82 m.). The discovery was found in the Bath Complex in the Lower Roman area of Tall el-Hammam, Jordan.

There was a rim around the wick hole with a cross on the nozzle. Radiated bands were evident around the shoulders running around the entire lamp with a ring base. Evidence of use was found around the wick hole. The lamp is 7.5 cm. long (3 in.) and 5 cm. (2 in.) wide with a height of 3 cm. (1.2 in).

 Other Oil Lamps

Over the ten years we identified 13 different oil lamps.

In  (Feb 2012) we discovered a part of an oil lamp with a Greek inscription from a bit later period (end of the 5th to the 7th or 8th century AD). It reads "Jesus light shines for all."
